Dropped Your Phone in Water? Here's What to Do (And Why Rice Won't Help!)

Updated: Sep 20

Dropped your phone in the sink, toilet or rain? You’re not alone. But before you toss it in a bag of rice—stop! This myth could actually make things worse. In this blog, we explain exactly what to do after water exposure, why rice isn’t the fix you think it is, and how to safely recover your phone without causing more damage.

Accidents happen — your phone slips into the sink, toilet, bathtub, or maybe gets drenched in the rain. Whatever the case, acting fast and smart is crucial if you want to save your device.

🛑 What to Do IMMEDIATELY After Water Damage:

  1. Take it out of the water as quickly as possible.Every second counts. The faster you remove it, the better the chances of saving it.

  2. Turn it off.If the phone is still on, power it down right away. Electricity and water don't mix — keeping it on may cause a short circuit.

  3. Remove the SIM card and memory card. This helps protect your data and allows for better drying of internal components.

  4. Dry the outside.Use a paper towel or soft cloth to gently dry the exterior, paying special attention to the charging port and headphone jack.

  5. Do NOT plug it in!Connecting a wet phone to a charger is one of the worst things you can do — it could fry the internal circuits.

🧂 Let’s Bust a Myth: Will Rice Really Save Your Phone?

No. That popular “put it in rice” trick is a myth — and can actually make things worse.

Here’s why:

  • Rice is not effective at absorbing moisture from deep inside your phone.

  • Tiny rice particles or dust can get stuck in ports or damage internal components.

  • It gives a false sense of security — the phone might seem fine for a while, but corrosion continues, and it could fail days or weeks later.

✅ What You SHOULD Do:

💡 Bring your phone to a professional repair shop as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours. At our service centre, we:

  • Disassemble the phone completely

  • Clean internal components using a professional ultrasonic cleaner

  • Replace any damaged parts (if needed)

  • Fully test the screen, battery, and motherboard

The sooner we get the device, the better the chances of saving it without losing your data or replacing the whole board.

🚫 What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t use a hairdryer — hot air can melt sensitive parts.

  • Don’t put it in the oven (yes, some people try that!)

  • Don’t assume it’s fine just because it turns on — hidden damage can appear later.

Quick Summary:

✅ DO THIS

❌ AVOID THIS

Power off your phone

Don’t turn it back on

Dry it externally

Don’t put it in rice

Take it to a repair specialist

Don’t charge it
