⚠️ Top 5 Electronics Myths People Still Believe (But Shouldn’t!)

Updated: Jul 30

Still believe rice fixes wet phones or charging overnight kills batteries? Here are 5 electronics myths people still fall for—and the facts that bust them.

The internet is full of “helpful” advice about tech devices. But the truth is, many of these tips are outdated or just plain wrong — and they can even damage your phone or laptop. As a repair shop that deals with electronics every day, we’re here to bust the top 5 most common tech myths once and for all.

Myth #1: Rice will save a water-damaged phone

It won’t. Putting your wet phone in rice is one of the most widespread myths — and one of the most harmful.

  • Rice doesn’t reach inside the phone.

  • It won’t stop corrosion or fix water damage.

  • Rice dust or grains can clog your charging port.

What to do instead: Power off the device immediately and bring it to a repair shop for professional ultrasonic cleaning.

Myth #2: You should always drain your battery to 0% before charging

This advice comes from the days of old nickel-based batteries. Modern phones use lithium-ion batteries that don’t like deep discharges.

  • Letting your battery hit 0% often can shorten its lifespan.

  • Frequent, partial charges are actually healthier.

Best practice: Start charging around 20–30% battery.

Myth #3: You must install antivirus software on your phone or Windows 10/11 PC

Not true — especially if you:

  • use an iPhone (iOS has strong built-in security),

  • run Windows 10 or 11, which comes with Windows Defender.

Installing third-party antivirus software can:

  • slow down your system,

  • show annoying popups,

  • duplicate the protection you already have.

Better alternative: Keep your system updated, download apps from official sources, and avoid suspicious links.

Myth #4: Cleaner apps will make your phone faster

Sounds helpful, but it’s often the opposite. Modern operating systems like Android and iOS already manage memory and background processes on their own.

  • These apps often close processes that just restart — wasting more battery.

  • Some even run ads or track usage in the background.

What actually helps: Uninstall unused apps and restart your device occasionally.

Myth #5: Putting your wet phone on a radiator will dry it out

This is risky and ineffective.

  • Heat from radiators can damage delicate components.

  • It doesn’t clean internal moisture from the motherboard.

  • It can actually speed up corrosion if the water isn’t removed first.

Best move: Don’t use heat. Power it off and bring it to a service centre within 24 hours for proper cleaning.
